Having trouble getting online? Feel free to call us at (509) 963-2200.

Peer-to-Peer
Peer-to-Peer numbers are down on ResNet! In the 2011-2012 school year, we saw an unusually low number of P2P offenses. Most types of offenses were down by more than 50% from the previous year. In hopes of continuing this trend, we would like to summarize on two key points. First, please be aware that the wireless on campus, even for academic buildings and the SURC, is routed through the ResNet network. It will catch you if you are downloading P2P files. The second point is one regarding the P2P software in general. These programs are able to open and run on their own, turning your computer into a host and uploading files without your knowledge. Many of these programs can be difficult to remove and must be removed manually to ensure that they are uninstalled completely.
Communication is key, and this is no exception. If you have questions about P2P, or if you've already received your first strike and want help preventing a second, give us a call or stop by. We want to help.
P2P Alternatives
As we start a new quarter at CWU, we want to provide you with some safe and legal alternatives to P2P. Here are a few music websites you can check out: Amazon.com, iTunes.com, Rhapsody.com and MOG.com. The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) has more information.
FREE Student Anti-virus Software
Current students are entitled to 1 free copy of the Sophos AntiVirus software. Logon to The Wildcat Connection and click on the "Sophos Antivirus" link to download the package. Be sure to uninstall your previous anti-virus software prior to installing Sophos. You must be online during the setup process to successfully install this program.
Resnet Premium Package
The Resnet Premium Package allows users to have twice the speed of basic Resnet and twice the download cap. If you are interested in this package, you may sign up here.
Currently our Basic Package offers 2.0Mbps download speed and a 4GB/day quota. For the Resnet Premium Package, the speed is 4.0Mbps down and a 8GB/day quota.
The Premium Package is currently being offered at a cost of $15.00 per month, but you will be charged for the remainder of the quarter (example, if there are exactly 2 months left in the quarter, you will see a charge for $30.00).
CWU Alert! and Desktop Alert!
CWU Alert! text, messaging, email and telephone messages are sent instantly to campus community subscribers whenever there is a campus emergency. Desktop Alert! is the same emergency notification system for your computer. Computers on ResNet must opt-in to this system, and if you have already opted in you will need to verify your configuration. For more information, please click here.
Outlook Express Setup
Having trouble setting up Outlook Express to work with your Groupwise? Click here for a useful help guide.
Attention: Students who use the Groupwise Client on their computers
We encourage all students who have older versions of the Groupwise email client installed on their home computers to upgrade to Groupwise 8, which offers a superior interface and compatibility with our mail servers.
Simply logon to The Wildcat Connection and click on the "Accessing CWU-Net Services from the Internet" link. Then select the "Groupwise Client Download" link. Read the instructions and download the file.
Do not remove the previous version of Groupwise, as this has caused problems on some machines. Instead, just run the installer and Groupwise 8 will replace your previous installation!
Peer to Peer Violation Remediation
Have you been in the 'Resnet Jail' for a P2P violation? Know someone that has? Know someone that is in jail now? Now there is a way to reduce your 'sentence' - take the Resnet P2P Remediation Quiz! You are allowed to take the quiz once for a first violation or a second violation. Sorry, students with a third violation are ineligible to take the quiz. In order to take the quiz, simply open your web browser, and when you are redirected to the jail page, scroll to the bottom and look for the link to the quiz.

Incoming Students
Prior to your arrival this upcoming quarter, Resnet strongly recommends that you review the Minimum Computer Requirements and Minimum Security Requirements. Complying with these minimum requirements may save you future headaches. Read more...
Intellectual Property and the Internet
Most people think that it is OK to download movies, music, and software from peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, when the truth is that doing so is not only illegal, but incredibly harmful to the people whose work is being stolen. Illegal downloading is just that - illegal. ITS has a few videos explaining in depth exactly what happens when you pirate intellectual property. For more P2P information and CWU policy click here.
Wahle, Brooklane and Getz-Short Apartment Tenants
Many of you have had questions regarding the Internet access provided in the apartments. Fairpoint provides the Wahle, Brooklane and Getz-Short Apartments with DSL service. For support, please contact ResNet Support at (509) 963-2200.
Please be aware that the DSL service provided by Fairpoint does not include an email address - all official business conducted by the university will still be done through your GroupWise email account, so we strongly encourage you to continue to check this account daily.
Spyware
Spyware is software that installs on your computer without your knowledge. It usually runs on the background. So what does spyware do? It gathers information of which pages you surf, and then sends the information to third-party companies via your internet connection. You may notice your computer and your internet connection running slower than before. You may also get numerous pop-up windows while surfing the internet. In some cases, spyware causes problems with your internet browser. To combat spyware check out our Avoid Spyware section on our Best Practices and Security Alerts page.
Security Alerts
The Internet is a dangerous place, and a malware or virus infection is a sure way of reducing your productivity! To avoid computer problems at inopportune times (such as during mid-terms or finals), make sure to keep your computer up to date with security fixes. Windows users should visit Microsoft Update, and Apple users should use the "Software Update" tool located on the Apple menu. Do this on a regular basis (about once a week).
The best way to remove an infection is to not get one in the first place. Make sure that you have current virus protection for your computer and like the security updates for your operating system, make sure that you update the virus definitions regularly (again, about once a week is ideal).
Bandwidth Violations
In order to reduce bandwidth bottlenecks, Resnet is monitoring bandwidth usage. If you are using P2P software, you internet connection may be disabled for a week (Read the AUP Violation Penalties for details). We do recommend that you remove any P2P software to avoid being quarantined again. Check out our P2P Removal page to guide you through the removal process for a typical P2P software. If you need help or have problems, call ResNet support at (509) 963-2200.
