"Phishing" scam hits CWU!
Be aware that there is a "phishing" scam targeting the CWU community, and not to fall victim! CWU will never ask for personal information via email. Please read this notice for complete details. Warner Music Group offers DRM-free Music on Amazon!
Warner Music Group has announced that it would begin selling DRM-free music at the Amazon music store. This represents a continuing trend of change in the music industry as it evaluates the success of it's anti-piracy efforts. The full article as reported BBC news is availible here.
Peer to Peer Violation Remediation
Have you been in the 'Resnet Jail' for a P2P violation? Know someone that has? Know someone that is in jail now? Now there is a way to reduce your 'sentence' - take the Resnet P2P Remediation Quiz! You are allowed to take the quiz once for a first violation or a second violation. Sorry, students with a third violation are ineligible to take the quiz. In order to take the quiz, simply open your web browser, and when you are redirected to the jail page, scroll to the bottom and look for the link to the quiz.
Microsoft Windows Vista and Resnet
Right now, Central Washington University is not deploying Windows Vista campus wide. Students are allowed to have computers using Vista, however at this time some services on the CWU network are not available to Vista users. All versions of Vista have been tested and do work with CWU's wireless. To look at the latest recommendations from the CWU Information and Technology Services department, see this page.

Intellectual Property and the Internet
Most people think that it is OK to download movies, music, and software from peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, when the truth is that doing so is not only illegal, but incredibly harmful to the people whose work is being stolen. Illegal downloading is just that - illegal. ITS has a few videos explaining in depth exactly what happens when you pirate intellectual property. For more P2P information and CWU policy click here.
Wahle Apartment Tenants
Many of you have had questions regarding the Internet access provided in the apartments. Central Washington University recently negotiated for Wahle Apartments to be provided with DSL service from Ellensburg Telephone. For support, please contact Resnet Support at 509-963-2200.
Please be aware that the DSL service provided by Ellensburg Telephone does not include an email address - all official business conducted by the university will still be done through your GroupWise email account, so we strongly encourage you to continue to check this account daily.
Spyware
Spyware is software that installs on your computer without your knowledge. It usually runs on the background. So what does spyware do? It gathers information of which pages you surf, and then sends the information to third-party companies via your internet connection. You may notice your computer and your internet connection running slower than before. You may also get numerous pop-up windows while surfing the internet. In some cases, spyware causes problems with your internet browser. To combat spyware check out our Avoid Spyware section on our Best Practices and Security Alerts page.
Security Alerts
The Internet is a dangerous place, and a malware or virus infection is a sure way of reducing your productivity! To avoid computer problems at inopportune times (such as during mid-terms or finals), make sure to keep your computer up to date with security fixes. Windows users should visit Microsoft Update, and Apple users should use the "Software Update" tool located on the Apple menu. Do this on a regular basis (such as once per week).
The best way to remove an infection is to not get one in the first place. Make sure that you have current virus protection for your computer, and like the security updates for your operating system, make sure that you update the virus definitions regularly (again, about once per week is ideal). If you have been infected and quarantined, you will want to visit our Resnet Windows Update page, and get a copy of our Resnet Cleaning Script, which automatically removes most infections. Note: the Resnet Windows Update site is not availible from off campus.
Bandwidth Violations
In order to reduce bandwidth bottlenecks, Resnet is monitoring bandwidth usage. If you are using P2P software, you internet connection may be disabled for a week (Read the AUP Violation Penalties for details). We do recommend that you remove any P2P software to avoid being quarantined again. Check out our P2P Removal page to guide you through the removal process for a typical P2P software. If you need help or have problems, call Resnet support at 963-2200.
